Test the touch pad MPMAN MID7C

Test the tablet pc MPMAN MID7C

As a follow on to record the brand MPMAN, we will now introduce you to the tablet pc MPMAN MID7C, marketed since late 2011 in our green lands.

Design and features
To be clear, for 99 €, you will not have metal shell, or Tegra processor 3! But this is nevertheless MID7C nice because it has a compact and solid finish, unlike the more upscale brands. The hull is fully plastic, the back of the tablet is glossy black (watch out for fingerprints!). A weight of 351g, you will have the following dimensions: 189 x 119 x 13 mm.

Despite this, all really strong, there is no cracking except on the side volume buttons and plugs, the hulls are properly assembled and all does not seem to want to detach the first impact. MPMAN played well the shot on this point, even if the design is very basic. Only drawback, the screws on the side of the connector out a little too head and after a few weeks of use, it will surely consider tighten ... The screen is pressed into the hull, just like the G9 Archos. It's quite annoying when you want to click on a link pasted down a web page, we would have liked the screen is flush with the hull ...

On the front, there are three buttons of conventional tablets Android 2.3 and lower: Menu, Home and Back. They're big, round and silver. They are physical, not touch. One likes or dislikes ... I personally think it looks a bit kitschy and "cheap" at a time! But they are nevertheless well built and do not move. We must press it and a good old crack occurs every time. As the hull, they give a real solid feel. MPMAN thank you!

The volume buttons and ignition are located on the high side of the machine. Unlike their cronies, they have a lot of play, raising fears of a rapid deterioration after several weeks of use. Moreover, we must insist on the power button to turn on or standby. Too bad ...

For connectivity, we are treated to the total, which is excellent for a tablet pc so cheap.

We thus find:

Mini-USB
Mini-HDMI
Micro-SD
Jack 3.5
The set is sealed in the tablet, it does not move and it is solide.Il is no much to say, this is basic but well done.

On the back cover, there is a single speaker, but well placed and do not bother, that we take the machine in landscape or portrait. Only problem, the sound quality is very low, the speaker spits and sizzles if we force the volume too ... Do not expect to hear your music or movies properly in an environment too noisy!

To complete the tour of the property, it has a webcam of 0.3 MP front panel to the videoconference. Needless to say the quality is awful ...

Regarding the characteristics of the MID7C, we have:

Telechips TCC8902 processor at 800 MHz
256 MB DDR2 RAM
4 GB of internal memory
5 points capacitive multitouch screen 800 * 480 WVGA
Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread
0.3 MP camera in front
WiFi 802.11 b / g / n
Mini-USB ports, mini HDMI, Micro SD up to 32GB
Battery life: 3 to 5 hours (during testing)
Interface
Requires low cost, we are left with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Yes, it hurts ... But we must not forget that version 4.0 was not yet out when MID7C was marketed. Android 3.2 is proprietary, so it was natural for MPMAN to turn to the last open version of the Google system. So we will have Android 2.3! An outdated system and unsuitable for tablet pcs.For those looking to be at the top level of the OS, go your way! MPMAN provides no update for its hardware and the hardware is too winded to be adapted by fans on ICS ... However, this tablet priced pokey will satisfy the least demanding of you. Let us review the software on the tablet.

Navigator
Basic, simple and predictable: we find the classic Android browser to surf the Net. It is relatively soft, the pages are sometimes very long to load ... The Flash is not supported either. No tabbed browsing ... If you are looking for a tablet to surf the long hours, prepare aspirin or while looking for more efficient models! At worst, change browser by doing a little research on the Market.

Gallery
Again, this is the basic, there is not much to say, it does its job even if sometimes it just train loading pictures. It also allows the videos to load into memory, if you do not want to go through the dedicated application.

Android Market
Excellent surprise for once, has MPMAN with her last baby of the official Android Market! Unfortunately, this is an older version, but which is nevertheless his job. However, you will not have access to all applications due to limitations of the tablet and the fact that it has no certification Google.

Camera
This application will allow you to take photos or videos of you using the integrated webcam on the front. The picture quality is really minimal, requires resolution of 0.3 MP ...

AppInstaller
Again and again a basic application, it is through it that you can manage your installations and removals. It should be mentioned, however a backup option that lets you back up your applications on a micro-SD card, if you would plan and formatting that you do not want to start from scratch!

ES File Explorer
To manage files, has built an excellent MPMAN ES File Explorer, allowing you to copy / paste, classify, and manage your applications accessing the same content from a PC on your LAN or to an FTP server. Personally, I think it's a very good initiative from the manufacturer.

Music
Ok, a little riddle: what application manages your music? You guessed it: the basic application for Android! Here too, MPMAN remained sober (it's getting much, I know ...) and offers the bare minimum. You can create playlists, organize your songs by artist, album or in bulk. And that's it! There is also the widget that comes with it, just to start a song on the fly from the desktop.

Video
And finally in the classic, the video application that will simply read your videos. The classification can be done in bulk, or by folder. Tablet decodes up to 1080p, this is good news to watch his films as a family on a TV equipped with HDMI.

Aldiko
Provided on the tablet version 2.0, this library will provide multimedia playback of hundreds of works in French or English, in free and premium versions. Reading is a real pleasure on the screen 7 ", another pleasant surprise from MPMAN. It is also possible to read PDF files with Aldiko.

And the rest
Bulk, there is also an application of tape to record a message using the microphone. The basic agenda Android is also present, as well as the calculator and clock. Finally, we will find the Google search applications and to manage the download ... downloads!Note also the presence of animated wallpapers.

In the notification bar from right to left, was the shortcuts for volume, WiFi indicator and what looks like an indicator for 3G. We also find the battery level, the Home button, Menu and Back, then an hour. In portrait mode, it's been rough, sometimes time is eaten on the right side, this is far from elegant ... But it is inherent in tablets Android 2.2 and 2.3.

Performance
For testing, the tablet pc was placed on MID7C benchmarks Antutu and Quadrant Standard. I got the following scores:

Antutu Benchmark: 1117 (strangely, the processor is calculated at 1 GHz instead of 800 MHz on this benchmark ...)
Quadrant Standard: 303

The benchmarks do not climb up, the tablet is less powerful than many smartphones ... I tried several games, like Angry Birds, but nothing happens, no one works on this machine. Only Star Legends kindly do me the honor to start, but turns in slide show mode is unplayable!

Apart from games, I had a lot of "Force Close" and accidental activation, crashes on some videos which loaded on YouTube. You will have to be patient if you plan to use slightly hungry applications. However, the launch and closing apps is relatively fast, the movements of the screen are quite fluid.

Decoding 1080p is no problem, it is a pleasure that side! Too bad the screen angles are truly zero, it must stay in front to enjoy it, despite a nice brightness and contrast for the price of the machine. If you wish to make an evening "holiday movies", planning to HDMI cable so that everyone takes advantage of an HDTV.

The WiFi reception is very good, I tested the tablet with a Freebox to the floor below, the signal did not stall once and the lobby was nearly full, regardless of distance with the Box. A very good thing for those who have a big house or who want to surf quietly on the terrace!

To hit the screen, although we recognize the capacitance is very sensitive (though I kept the protective film during testing), just a touch screen to react. However, if you press the back cover, bubbles appear everywhere on the slab ... That surely risk of damaging the equipment in the long term ...

I also tried connecting hardware via the USB port with an adapter, the results are mixed. My QWERTY keyboard was recognized as a QWERTY, impossible to change these settings ... My mouse was working against nickel. I tried connecting an external hard drive, but without success ... The micro-SD card has been recognized against the first try, so you can add an adapter that up to 16 GB (unfortunately no more ...) to to extend the low capacity of your MID7C.

Level of autonomy, it is not the top, I managed to take just 5 hours while mixing surfing, video and games, all in full brightness. For the load, it's as long and I happened to have the charge indicator remained stuck at 40% for hours. To solve the problem, simply unplug the adapter and reconnect.

Conclusion
It is clear that is well in the presence of a low-cost tablet pc. Many defects, more or less unpleasant, tarnished the use of this machine. But if you look at the ultra aggressive price of 99 €, you will not complain too much. Solid design, decoding HD video, the bright screen and Android Market are undeniable assets for this tablet. Nevertheless, frequent crashes, lack of power and the screen at the corners too low can be a hindrance to a future purchase ... I will recommend this tablet for those who want an "advanced reading light." For those who want a low-cost machine more efficient, I will test you for the MP1027, always with MPMAN, which has more advantages for 80 € more. Stay connected!

MPMAN graced us with an ultra low-cost tablet by the end of 2011, whose design can pleasantly surprise given the price despite the disappointing performance on many points ... Hopefully 2012 models bring more innovations and come out a bit of "classic" low-cost Android!
